Library Trends explores the philosophy of information in issue and webinar

Design and the Philosophy of Information

The School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the publication of Library Trends 73 (1–2). Inspired by the contributions of Marcia Bates, this issue, "Design and the Philosophy of Information," highlights the cultural, social, and philosophical dimensions of information design. Ken Herold served as guest editor of this issue, which is freely available under an open access publishing model.

On April 17, 2025, Library Trends will host a webinar featuring the latest issue, which will include discussions about the philosophy of information within librarianship with the guest editor and select authors.

The table of contents includes:

  • "Introduction: Design in the Philosophy of Information" by Ken Herold
  • "Holistic Epistemology and Prospects for Design in the Philosophy of Information" by Archie L. Dick
  • "A Reconsideration of Metatheories of Library and Information Science: A Chinese Information Philosophy Perspective" by Lin Wang and Jiaxuan Duan
  • "The Fate of the Document in Library and Information Science" by Steve Fuller
  • "Truth and Agency: Rethinking the Definition of Information" by Kathleen Lourdes B. Obille
  • "Re-Visiting the Revised Knowledge Pyramid" by Aric Haas

Library Trends is an essential tool for professional librarians and educators alike. Each issue explores critical trends in professional librarianship and includes practical applications, thorough analyses, and literature reviews. The journal is published quarterly for the School of Information Sciences by the Johns Hopkins University Press. Subscriptions to current issues are available both online and in print.

Back issues (1952 through two years prior to the current issue) are available online through IDEALS, the digital repository for scholarly works produced at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Most recently, IDEALS opened public access to Library Trends 70 (4), "Joy of Information."

Please send ideas, inquiries, or issue proposals via email to Melissa Wong, editor in chief, at [email protected].
